As many of you know, I am a big Rand Paul supporter. However, I was pleasantly surprised by how well Dr. Ben Carson did tonight.
His closing remark was perhaps his best, noting that he is the first (neurosurgeon) candidate to take half of a brain out of a patient, “though if you’ve been to Washington you’d think that someone beat me to it.” His answer to race relations was wonderful. Carson is a brilliant man and he truly understands the philosophical disagreements in the political realm, even if his politician-like rehearsed answers aren’t always up-to-snuff.
His biggest missed opportunity came when he was asked a question about how he would respond to Hillary Clinton’s rhetoric of class and race warfare. I would rate Carson’s answer as an “okay.” He noted the philosophical disagreements he has with Clinton and that his campaign would be one of education. What he should have said was that Clinton’s rhetoric would fall flat because as the (hypothetical) nominee for the Republican party, Carson is a black man from a poor upbringing.
Carson’s story is the American dream. Raised (after the age of 8) by a single illiterate mother, Carson made his way through the streets of Detroit to become a neurosurgeon and the head of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Clinton’s rhetoric of class warfare and race warfare would fall flat against the candidate Carson, and then the Democrats would be left with an empty message in the general election.
