Hi friends,
In case you have not yet heard, I have a debate next week on Tuesday, October 27th at 6pm Central time. The debate topic is “Does God Decree All Evil?” and I will be answering in the negative. Answering in the affirmative is Pastor Douglas Wilson, a popular Reformed thinker and author.
The debate will be livestreamed on “The Gospel Truth” YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8A7ViRrFm94
I am excited for this opportunity. I’ve participated in a couple dialogue/discussions within this realm of theological inquiry, but this is my first formal debate. You may anticipate some spirited cross-examination questions and answers, so you won’t want to miss this event. Certainly keep an eye out for post-debate commentary from yours truly.
With regard to my position, the debate organizer labeled my position as “Arminian.” While many Arminians agree with my position on this subject, I do not self-identify as an Arminian for a number of reasons. I’m hopeful for a chance to talk about that toward the end of the debate when there is open Q&A, but in case I’m unable to bring that up I wanted to mention it here. I disagree with Classical Arminians and Wesleyan Arminians on a few issues, some of them important enough for me to refrain from belonging in those groups (although I consider them friendly allies!). The biggest departure comes on my view of the prima gratia (the first grace, aka God’s grace given at creation). I hope to write more about this, especially when I get around to publishing my doctoral dissertation.
